Durham, England

Durham is a historic market city located in the north east of England built around a tight loop in the River Wear. The city is dominated by the impressive Romanesque Cathedral and University. However, there is more to the city than the historical architecture and students. Within the city centre there are many cafes, bars and pubs. Most of the city centre has closed to traffic and hence is the perfect place to browse around the shops, cobbled streets and soak up the historic atmosphere.

Near the city centre

It is surprisingly easy to escape the centre of Durham to the serene peace of the riverside woodland paths. These paths run through the woodland that surrounds the central part of Durham. Just north of the university science site there are the Botanic Gardens which features a range of plants from around the world. Located within walking distance to the east of Durham city centre is Crook Hall. This medieval manor house dating from the 13th century and features extensive gardens.

Around Durham

Located near Durham there are several attractions worth visiting. Beamish is an open air museum depicting life in northern England during the early 1800s and 1900s. In Barnard Castle there is the Bowes Museum with a collection covering local and European arts. Located just south of NewcastleGateshead is the Angel of the North – a modern steel sculpture which has become an emblem for the north east of England.
