Oxford, England

Oxford is home to the oldest university in the English speaking world and is known as the 'city of dreaming spires', in reference to the harmonious architecture of the university buildings. The River Thames runs through Oxford, where for a distance of some 10 miles it is known as the Isis. The location of Oxford was first occupied in the 8th century and the University of Oxford was first mentioned in 12th century records. Oxford has many major tourist attractions, many related to the university and colleges. As well as several famous institutions, the town centre is home to Carfax Tower and The Oxford Story, a historical themed ride. In the summer, punting on the River Thames/Isis and the River Cherwell is popular.

Museums and galleries

Oxford is home to a large number of museums and galleries. These include the Ashmolean Museum, and the Pitt Rivers Museum which are part of Oxford University. There is also the Museum of Oxford, the Museum of Modern Art and Science Oxford. There are also several famous building that are worth visiting including the Bodleian Library, the Clarendon Building which is often used as a set for film and television, the Radcliffe Camera and the Sheldonian Theatre.
