Stratford-upon-Avon, England

Stratford-upon-Avon is world famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). The RSC runs three theatres in the town – the Swan, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the the Courtyard Theatre and performs a wide range of Shakespearian and other plays.

The Shakespeare Properties

Within the town it is possible to visit several buildings related to William Shakespeare. The most famous is the Birthplace located on Henley Street. Just outside Stratford is Anne Hathaway's Cottage at Shottery, which is the former home of Shakespeare's wife and Mary Arden's House where his mother lived.

Non Shakespeare Attractions

Stratford offers a few non-Shakespearean attractions including a Teddy Bear Museum, a Butterfly Farm, a Witchcraft Exhibition, the Bancroft Gardens, and The Black Swan (known as the Dirty Duck), a pub which is often visited by actors from the theatre.

Near Stratford

Within easy reach of Stratford is the historic house and dear park of Charlecote Park from which Shakespeare reputedly poached deer. The fine stately home of Ragley Hall, is about 10 miles from Stratford and is home to the Jerwood Sculpture Park. Stratford can also form an excellent base for exploring the Cotswold area.
