The Monument at the centre of the Newcastle shopping area is of Earl Grey (of the tea). The monument was built in 1837-38 by the architect Benjamin Green and sculptor Edward Hodges. The column is located at the junction of Grey Street and Blackett Street and is a Grade One listed building.
