View high resolution full screen version
Malham Cove is a spectacular, curved limestone crag. The height of the cove wall is 70m (230ft) and the span is some 200m (655ft) wide. The coves impressive size and scenery was carved out by the Malham Tarn meltwaters as they fell over the cove during the last ice age. Malham Beck re-emerges at the base of the cove wall into a pool. This is after it sinks and disappears underground just after Malham Tarn. Malham Beck is the main source of the River Aire. The renown Limestone Pavement sits on the top of Malham Cove and its deeply fissured channels are a result of weathering by acid rain.
